Views in Valencia
Another city I have previously visited but this time I explored Valencia in more depth. I stayed in the Ruzafa area which is very arty and full of fantastic places to eat and drink.
There is a lot to see and do in Valencia but one of the main highlights is the local drink concoction; Agua De Valencia; which varies across the city but generally is Vodka, Gin, Orange Juice and Champagne. Sounds delicious but dangerous hey? It is! Because it essentially tastes like fizzy orange juice it goes down very easily before you realise the affects of the alcohol!
Hiring bikes in Valencia is a must in order to ride along the dried up river bed which has now been turned into wonderful landscape gardens - Jardín del Turia! Which houses The City of Arts and Sciences, a combination of water, amazing structures, museums and the aquarium. It's fantastic to look at and during the summer you can kayak on the water in a see through kayak or even try zorbing on the water...
Also the 20 minute metro from the Old Town to the beach is worth the effort, a long stretch of beach which has a market, restaurants and bars lining the promenade. The sea is a lovely temperature in summer and swimming a must, I actually embarked on a catamaran swimming trip (€18) which takes you out into the sea looking back on the city and you can swim around without worrying about your possessions being left unattended on the beach.
The Old Town has various towers you can go up to get awesome views over the city and lots of churches, cathedrals and plazas that you could wander for days, stopping for plenty of Agua de Valencia on the way round...
Some excellent restaurants that I can recommend are: Cappuccino in Plaça de Reina which has an amazing "Super Brunch" and also great Agua De Valencia with free cold tapas (when you purchase a drink) on the bar including sandwiches, dips, crudités, salad, cous cous etc.
La Mas Bonita is a well known place to go in Valencia, the restaurant on the beach and the beach bar itself being popular. I queued for the restaurant on the beach front and there is also another, less populated branch in the Ruzafa area. They are famous for their amazing cakes and I can vouch for both the Kinder Bueno Cake and the Nutella Cheesecake as well as great breakfast items and all day dining options!
