The Cityscape of São Paulo

The Cityscape of São Paulo

People seem to either love or hate São Paulo, a lot of people we met along the way told us it wasn't worth the stop over but we enjoyed our time there!

We only had 2 full days so we literally covered the whole city and saw all the major attractions in these two days. We walked everywhere which is obviously more time consuming and bulked out our days - 50,000 steps in two days!! It's a very big city so it does take a while to walk from A to B but we we didn't have an extensive list of things to do and see, we walked around and took our time to fill the two days...

So we saw:

Paulista Avenue - well known for its shops and being the main avenue in the city

Augusta Avenue - another "'main" road known for its restaurants and bars

Beco do Batman - a cool pedestrianised alleyway full of street art and graffiti

Pinheiros Area - full of nice housing, expensive shops and lots of nice restaurants!

Liberdade - the biggest Japanese community outside of Japan and they had a Sunday market on which was fun

Municipal Market - great for stocking up on fresh fruit and vegetables, it's also full of little restaurants

The Cathedral - a lovely building from the outside, it was Sunday Mass when we passed so we didn't go in

Ibirapuera Park - a nice, big park but very busy with families relaxing and teenagers gathering to rollerblade or skate on the weekends

São Paulo is nice for a couple of days but it's nor amazing... We didn't feel unsafe but we had heard mixed reviews about safety. We didn't go out at night and if you're worried about the safety then use the bus or subway system as opposed to walking around the city.

It's not a clean city, there's lots of rubbish and graffiti along with a huge homeless community that sleep everywhere and anywhere.

We stayed in São Paulo Global Backpackers which is close to Paulista and nearby to a subway station. The hostel is nice, lots of areas to sit and chill, breakfast included and a good kitchen too. The rooms are very hot at night and our fan only worked intermittently but otherwise it's a great choice in this gigantic city!
